Well, it’s been a crazy week. We have had the hardest time getting back on schedule after summer vacation! My kids still want to stay up late and sleep in late. You would think that getting up early would encourage them to fall asleep earlier but no, they still fight sleep. I can’t really blame my kids for my lack of sleep, I could years ago before they were able to sleep through the night. But now, I have no one to blame but myself. I fight sleep too and I’m sure they learned their behavior from me. So last week, I was either very foolish or very hopeful to think my plan to turn off all electronics by 8:30 and be asleep by 10:00 would work. I wanted it to work! It just wasn’t that straightforward in practice.
There is always something to keep me from sleep. Sick kids, laundry, dishes, lunches, homework, signing papers for school, email, this blog, social obligations, etc. all took turns either blocking me from crawling into bed or kicking me out of bed. So, I finally broke down and said enough was enough. I threw my nighttime routine out the window. I let the chores wait, I said no to people and asked for help with obligations. And you know what? It worked! I was able to go to bed earlier and earlier each night. I got more sleep, not enough, but more is better than nothing.
I’ve got to admit that I had a secret weapon last week. I decided to use the half hour after I got home from work but before I had to pick my kids up from school to take a nap. I usually use that time to get things done without distractions. It felt weird at first to lay down during the day, like I was doing something I shouldn’t be doing. But then I thought about it and decided that between work, my kids, housework and all the things, I put in about 18 hour days. I decided that a 30 minute break was more than justified!
I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I probably won’t get enough sleep for years to come and that’s ok. I think I can get close to enough by just saying no to some things and making some things just wait until I am able to tackle them. Oh and the nap! I will sneak in as many of those as possible. =)
